    Tumwater Falls

    Tumwater Falls is a stunning 82-foot waterfall on the Deschutes River. The name "Tumwater" comes from the Chinook jargon word meaning "waterfall." The Tumwater Falls Park offers walking trails, salmon viewing in autumn, and gorgeous scenery year-round.

    First Settlement on Puget Sound

    In 1845, Tumwater became the first permanent European-American settlement in the Puget Sound region. It was the terminus of the Oregon Trail and was originally named New Market by settlers who relied on energy from the Deschutes River.

    Olympia Brewing Company

    The Olympia Brewing Company was founded in Tumwater in 1896 by Leopold Schmidt, who chose the site for its artesian water. The famous slogan "It's the Water" celebrated Tumwater's pure water source. The brewery operated for over a century and remains an important historic and cultural site.

    Pacific Northwest Living

    With a population of about 25,000, Tumwater offers the perfect blend of small-city charm with easy access to the state capital Olympia, JBLM, and the greater Seattle-Tacoma metro. Minutes from I-5, it's one of the most convenient communities in Thurston County.

    Deschutes River Fishing

    The Deschutes River runs through Tumwater and is famous for its fall Chinook salmon runs. Watch salmon jump at Tumwater Falls Park during September through November — a truly spectacular Pacific Northwest experience.

    Tumwater Falls Park

    A beautiful park featuring the 82-foot Tumwater Falls, paved walking trails along the Deschutes River, picnic areas, and a footbridge. The park is free and open year-round. Dogs are welcome on leash.

    Black Lake Meadows

    A 46-acre nature reserve with a 1.1-mile loop trail, perfect for easy hiking and birdwatching. Located near Black Lake, it's a haven for native wildlife and wildflowers throughout the seasons.

    Birdwatching & Wildlife

    The Black Lake Meadows area and Deschutes River corridor support diverse bird species and wildlife. The Black Hills Audubon Society has designated Black Lake Meadows as a premier birding destination.

    Nearby Capitol Forest offers over 80 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-road vehicles. The region has endless miles of evergreen forests, waterfalls, and conservation areas.
