A Guide to Tumwater's Best Trails & Parks for Every Season

    February 15, 2026 · 6 min read

Tumwater's outdoor scene works in every season. Winter is for misty walks at Tumwater Falls Park, where the 82-foot falls run hardest and the crowds are smallest.

Spring brings wildflowers to Black Lake Meadows and the 1.1-mile loop trail there — one of the best birding spots in Thurston County. Summer is Black Lake's time: stocked trout, warm-water bass, kayaking, and swimming.

Fall is the highlight of the year. Chinook salmon return to the Deschutes River and you can watch them leap at Tumwater Falls from September through November. Pair it with a hike at nearby Capitol Forest for a perfect PNW weekend.
